I guess I'm giving up posting "anniversaries", I've fallen behind on the April ones! Better late than never, right?
A major show for us. As usual, we had a bad sound mix and so vocally this is all over the place. But we packed the place with a really great crowd - something we did many times at this wonderful dive. (for more about the Nightingale Bar, check out this post....) This was a big month for us, in general. It had started with us breaking into the premier club on Long Island, The Right Track Inn. Now, towards the end, we made our debut here, where Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler had made their home base before they had recently "blown up". According to my notes, Jim Colford (drummer for our pals, The Skels) had recommended us to Tom, the wry manager of the club. Thank you, Jim!
You can tell how important we thought this show was by the sheer amount of flyers Hubie produced!

Vocally this is raggedy, so be prepared....we couldn't hear ourselves, and so as long as you aren't expecting our greatest harmonies, you'll be ok with this one. I'm listening to it right now and having a good ole time! I was expecting worse! There are a few mishaps, but the overwhelming vibe is fun fun, one two one two...
Man, dig the drummer on "Thundersong"! Usually I hate that guy! I even like his verse for a change! Still can't stand his between-song banter, though. Ted also is having quite a night, though that's not as surprising! It's more like when is Ted NOT having a good night, at least on bass! Hubie is in a particularly playful and festive mood throughout....so much so that in my notes I wondered if he was a little drunk! My notes say that, but I don't think that now. I mean, we were in a good mood, it was a big gig, and we drew a big crowd (a big crowd for a small room!) What wasn't there to be festive about?
At one point, we talk about Lauren. Lauren was Steve's girlfriend - and my housemate - at the time, and had made this big UFO with our name on it, which we brought onstage with us. I wonder if there's a picture of it. Anyways, this was the first time we had it onstage and apparently there was some mishap with it, so that's what we're talking about when we're apologizing to her from the stage.
This gig had many dividends. We were seen by The Dreyer Brothers who asked us to play with them the following week (and many other times) at Desmond's. I know we picked up at least one fan, a girl who came to a bunch of our gigs at Nightingale's, even bringing balloons for Ted's birthday! And, of course, we went on to play Nightingale's regularly.
This show was a party, the first of many we had at the ole Nightingale. As some stranger quips as soon as the show is over.... "These guys were great!" See for yourselves!
