Stony Brook Field House, summer 1986

Found these on a compilation tape of various mid-80s recordings; don't know what happened to the actual original tape of this rehearsal.

It's funny, we are sniping at each other the whole time!!!  As usual!  This is exactly what all our early rehearsals were like, unfortunately.  Because this is so early, and we were practically children at this point, I didn't edit that stuff out.  At this point in time, Ward & Hubie were doing some collaborations - and who would sing lead was sometimes an issue!  Case in point with "A Colder Wind", a song with a riff that TO THIS DAY, I still play sometimes!  I think the better version of this song (there's only two, sadly) is from the Jerry's Place gig...though that's not saying much!  Anyways, my enduring memories of the first year I was in the band are exactly like this: starting a song....and breaking down within moments! "A Colder Wind" was written during a rehearsal - possibly this very one.  I remember Hubie being stuck for a chord and me actually taking the guitar from him and trying to come up with one, myself!  Me, the kid drummer! After about ten seconds of this, Hubie impatiently grabbed the guitar back (quite rightly!)...."gimme that guitar!" and within seconds arrived at the one used in the song.  "This is the chord", he announced, and so it was.

This tape also has us playing through Hubie's new song "Heart And Mind"....complete with Hubie admonishing us for playing too heavy!!!  We'd eventually record this song at our next recording session in August. It was probably my favorite song of ours, at the time.  Still is, actually!

The first song of the set is one of the oldest LOOB numbers, "(She's) Not My Girl".  It features the immortal chorus: "I'll tell you one thing.....I'll tell you a second thing......she's  not, she's not my girl!."  This song was open-ended, varied in length, and always featured different abominations attributed to said girl (things such as bad hygiene, strange means of employment, etc).  Normally each member would have to "prove" that she wasn't his girl. This song was already around when I joined, and we continued to play it every once in a while over the next few years.  "Island Music" sort of replaced it as our comic relief number.

My only memory of this rehearsal is that it was dark outside when we recorded these songs.
