The Right Track Inn, November 12, 1992

When you hear so many of these 1992 tapes, and not all of them stellar, it can get a little dispiriting!  And then.....there's shows like this one!

Here's something you don't see everyday on flyers: "Free Mushrooms For All Interested"!  Billy!!!! "Finally Balanced" was me and Chris playing with a guitar player from a band called "Final Cry", backing Billy up - hence the name: "Finally Balanced"!  The good news is that anyone who was interested in the free mushrooms....they got one hell of a show from Life Out Of Balance!

I'm not sure if this was a last minute addition, this show.  The flyer doesn't mention us, it's a small audience, I seem to remember (vaguely) Billy asking us to do the show at the last minute.  I have a distinct memory of walking through the club after our set and feeling like a conquerer, like we had played a particularly great show! The feeling of invincibility! In fact, in my mind, I've always thought our three best Right Track Inn shows (and so, three of our best shows ever) were the April and July shows, along with this one.
Another clue: the Right Track Inn gig is not listed on our November calendar.  Incidentally, I believe the All Aboard gig that's listed was canceled.  The first Lion's Den gig of the month can be found by clicking here.  The Nightingale Bar gig can be found by clicking here.

Once again, Louis joins us onstage and - in marked contrast to the Nightingale's gig (see previous post) - handles most of the trumpet playing by himself on this show.  He sounds great, another one of his best performances with the band. When not playing particularly fantastic keyboards on this show, Lawrence whistles and contributes vocally.  Towards the end of the show ("Bottle In The Ocean"), Lawrence does pick up his horn and - again, like the Nightingale show - plays some absolutely superb trumpet, often dueting with Lou. These two shows are Trumpet Heaven!  Steve also sounds fantastic, as usual, on the accordion on this show, even between songs!  He also kills it on the percussion jam of "Gimme Fun".  I'll write more in detail about Steve's musical contributions in a coming post.

The real treasure of this particular tape is the opener: this was "the" prototype of "Soon Come" and we even used this version as the song that you'd call in to hear us on the Village Voice Hotline, to see what our band sounded like. (we were described as World Music, ha! See below.)  After this breakthrough version, we would end up adding a great little "skipping" jam theme, "the finishing touch", but other than that, this is the go-to version for "Soon Come".
You'd call up the Village Voice Hotline, and you'd hear this Right Track Inn performance of "Soon Come".
"New Voice" wasn't quite the perfect fit with the 'circus era" band....that is until we completely slowed it down and changed the arrangement soon after this show!  Still, this version gets pretty good, all things considered.... as good as it got with this incarnation.  Once again, let it be said: the mix at the Right Track Inn was the absolute greatest!

Something about the Right Track Inn always brought out an especially great "Thundersong"!  The RTI was home base for "Thundersong"!   This one is well up to standard!  Way out!  Dig it!

"Bottle In The Ocean" again sounds great!  This and "Caveman" (which we also turn in a very nice version of) were probably the best songs I ever wrote for the band, though the lyrics to both wouldn't be finished until after I left.  I had finally learned a lesson that I got from Hubie years earlier: don't overwrite the song.  My writing got much better post-LOOB - but these two songs were definite major stepping stones for me.  In fact, "Caveman" stayed in my sets right through 2009, albeit with the arrangement it wound up with (suggested by ex-LOOBer Frank Russell!  It can be heard in its final incarnation here.)  I played "Bottle In The Ocean" with the next band I was in, but it wasn't anywhere near as great as it was with the Life Out Of Balance Boys!

Love how Steve picks up the go-go bells in the intro to "I Owe" and "foreshadows" Hubie's "Gimme Fun" part!  Always an inventive percussionist, always contributing, never obtrusive....easy to take for granted!

Something is weird with "Gimme Fun"....we start chanting "Ted has a bass problem" and launch into this wacky thing...I can't even describe it!  We handle it expertly! How we resolved the situation, though...I know not, as the tape tragically cuts!  I love this show!

I love this band!
