This tape answers - or perhaps poses - the question: is it Life Out Of Balance if there's no Hubie?
I don't think one could say until listening to this tape!

This newsletter - probably written by Ted - was never used. After this, Lawrence and sometimes Hubie designed the flyers. The Right Track Inn show on the 2nd had been one of our all-time great shows. |
On this day, Hubie fell ill and had to miss the gig. As far as I know, it's the only such occasion. Perhaps we should have canceled, but we were playing with our friends, Piltdown Man, and didn't want to leave them in a lurch. We eventually were booked solid throughout the summer at this venue, home of the Scofflaws, legendary local ska band. I'm pretty sure we debated it - and felt we could maybe pull it off....with a little help from our friend, former member and a true viper, Frank Russell!
We manage, let's put it that way. We had a very short rehearsal at the Red House before the gig. What I was happy to hear is that it's not a train wreck, we pull it off.
We do a great Frank song, that would have been a monster had he stayed in LOOB.

I Am A Lion

Oy gevalt, this would have been a monster, trust me. If I could only go back in time and....tell Frank to write that song a year earlier, so we could have done it! It's the one that got away.
Other than "I Am A Lion", the highlight of this tape is the very end! In honor of tax day, we do "I Owe" because "I know wherever Hubie is now, he would sing this to you if he were here....." I sing the first verse, Ted sings the second. And - just to make it a total tribute and homage - Ted seizes the go-go bells and plays Hubie's signature lick. (if it's not Ted that does it, someone does!)
"...and I told Hubie, you should have seen a doctor....!"
I do not know what everyone is cheering about at the end - perhaps I held up a sign that said "Who's coming to the Red House?"

So Hubie was sick on April 11, 1991. Then he was sick on April 14, 1992. (he's not on the April 16, 1990 tape either!) Hubie, pop that vitamin C! Apparently this is a bad time of year for you!
