"An Acoustic Event" at Lauterbach's, May 16, 1992

So funny, the reason I grabbed this tape is because I had posted that Nightingale's show....and the flyer for that show also advertised this one.  I figured, let's knock this flyer out! Found the tape, put it on, immediately remembered.
The flyer that led to me picking this tape that fateful day.....

Two things brought this "acoustic event" to pass.  One was every time we played Lauterbach's, there were sound problems up the yazoo.  You can hear a perfect example of this phenomenon here.

The second was....we hadn't played acoustic since Frank was in the band!  "I'm Crying" and "What  You Say" just standing there with nothing to do all this time, imagine that!....so, hey, why don't we make Lauterbach's an easy gig for once in our lives.....and go acoustic!  We were playing so much around that time, any little added thing to make a show distinctive was a bonus.

At this point in time, Lawrence was making all the posters....and he was also like the band's cheerleader from within!  He had seen the band a bunch of times before he started playing with us.  In fact, the first day he saw us, we did an acoustic set in the middle of our show.  The audience-perspective that Lawrence had might have given him added zeal.  If Hubie or Ted had made the flyer, it might have been "an acoustic set". To Lawrence....this was an acoustic event!

(or maybe we just told him, "write 'acoustic event' ") (or maybe he was taking the piss out of the rest of us for making such a big deal about doing an acoustic show!)

Anyways....it's advertised as an acoustic event.....and I'm not sure it wasn't!

I put this tape on and wow.  First off....this is the Hubie, Stills and Nash show!!!!  I mean, really! May I just take a moment to sing the praises of these three fine singers!  On all these LOOB tapes!  Or have I done that already in another post?  Man....these harmonies were so much fun to sing.  Fun is too frivolous a word. It's like you turn into vapor.  A human organ!  No, not that organ!

Lawrence is in great form, both instrumentally and performance! This was Lawrence's "baby voice" period - which when you're playing music, or doing anything in art....keeping yourself innocent and open like a baby is the best policy.  Just in case you're wondering where and why the baby talk is coming from. We wouldn't have it any other way!  This tape also has Lawrence playing thumb piano! (or is that me?!) (Nah, that's Lawrence!)

Lastly, Steve is, as always, just so tasteful on the accordion, always filling in just enough, stepping up and contributing something great and then literally fading back into the darkness....like a thief in the night, except he gives instead of steals! Something like that.  Percussion-wise also, I actually got to interact musically more with Steve when we'd play acoustically.  I couldn't hear him that well when we'd be electric, with me going bananas on the drumset, and Dancing Lawrence talking baby talk in my monitor!  Who knew where the conga ended and the synth began? Not me!  Anyways, when we'd play acoustic, I'd play brushes and he'd play conga or bongos and we got a nice undercurrent of rhythm propelling the set along.

So ok, yeah, we know all this already, LOOB is great....what else you got?  Well...how about this? Midway through the set, we bring J.P. up to blow some harp!  We open the show with a surprise gag from this now-ancient LOOB artifact! Hubie & Ted have some great banter. Basically, everything about this tape is a plus!  So what are you waiting for?  Let the event begin!
