Rocky Point Studio, December 12, 1990
The newsletter does not lie. We were working up some new tunes! Whether we played them as part of our upcoming shows I can't tell you since I have only four 1991 shows. ("Ocean Town" is played at all four). There are two tapes that encompass December 12, 13 & the wee early hours of the 14th. First we start with the rehearsal on the 12th, which takes up one side of the first tape.
The tape as it begins finds us already mid-jam, almost listlessly playing a slow blues with Hubie on lead. For three minutes, Hubie is playing some lead over blues changes - a real rarity. Because we NEVER did this, jam the blues. He's just noodling around, even tapping at one point, just trying this and that out, nothing serious...but this cavalier, almost bored attitude is made great by what follows.
After 3 minutes we decide to leave the blues and seamlessly slip into a long, relaxed jam that takes its sweet time for another 6 minutes, always inching towards, hinting at - and at long last landing on - a gentle, almost soft 14-minute "Gimme Fun". This beautiful, distinctive "G.F." has a really great percussion break, lots of interplay. We even get out of the song slightly different than usual, Hubie bringing things full circle by singing a bluesy line at the end. All told, it's a very interesting 23 minutes. And that's how we STARTED the rehearsal!!!!
These early versions of "Gimme Fun" are always full of surprises!
Speaking of early versions, a fascinating one of "I Owe", (the earliest one I know of, and with a pretty out-there intro!) is next up. We finish the tape with a stab at "Inside The Rain/Rise". It gets a little out of control (I blame the drummer!). The one we did the following night is superior. "Inside The Rain" was a Hubie song that had kicked around a bit, and "Rise" was an old Ted song that we had played back in 1988.
The next day we did some more new songs, ones you probably have forgotten about! But first.....

Hubert Poole - guitar, vocal, percussion
Frank Russell - guitar, vocal, percussion
Ted Schreiber - bass, vocal, percussion
Michael Goodman - drums, vocal
Engineered by Frank Buchwalder. Frank may possibly join us on the "Gimme Fun" jam, we may even trade off on the drumset, not quite sure. It sounds like me the whole way, but there's a part where it sounds like there's a switch-off, and it spurs the faintest of memories. Who knows, who cares. More about Frank B. in the next post.
Recorded on two tracks of a Tascam Portastudio. I did a weird thing on this one, I put the chat sections in a separate folder, as the three main tunes flow so well together, almost like an album! To hear the tape as it originally was, just take those chat files (and the Map Collection tune I posed here) and put them with the rest, they should all play in order.
