The longest "Sailing", July 29, 1990

What is listed as "Mountain Jam" is Frank playing the famous riff while others are tuning, ad infinitum.  I edited it out; I can assure you, you're not missing anything.

Maybe I'll find another, but this is most likely the longest "Sailing".  Not only is it the longest "Sailing", it might be the best; it is definitely one of the best.  There is no ego in this one, and there is no wrong move.  At one point we slip into the so-called "art rock jam" (that would later appear in "Scapegrace"). Near the end of this great performance, as we're all at a whisper, I was startled to hear Hubie suddenly start playing the lonely, sad melody of "Big Black Cloud", a really affecting song from a tape of demos he had made the year before....but which now seemed a million miles away.

I haven't re-listened to the rest of the tape, but I can see that we also did what may be the longest "Advocate", 10 minutes plus.  There's also a sort of punk jam in the beginning....at first I give it my all but pretty quickly I start messing around (we're just warming up before rehearsal).....listening back, I wish I had taken it more seriously (and that we had done more stuff like that) because, as you can hear when we first go into it, we could totally ace that style!  And style hopping was our middle name!

At some point, I tell someone that mixing valium and wine coolers is not the best idea.  At first I thought I was saying this to Frank or Ted, but later in the tape, visitors can be heard in attendance. I'm sure that's who I was addressing since I cannot envision Frank nor Ted sipping on a wine cooler (or popping valium)!  Whoever they were, they got one hell of a "Sailing", though incredibly this night was surpassed a month later by what was probably the most spectacular LOOB rehearsal of all time: the legendary "Steve Antos Night".......stay tuned for that!
