Imagine my surprise when I put this tape on to find Frank returning to the fold for a night! At Lauterbach's, of all places! And it's a great tape! Even more baffling is that Frank is NOT on the following night's gig, at the All Aboard, practically in his backyard!
Everybody plays beautifully on this one, which took place 23 years ago tonight. We seem really relaxed, by this point we had sort of a cavalier attitude about Lauterbach's! It never had great sound, at least not on stage! That's my memory, anyways: not being able to hear the vocals! Also, at that time, playing Brooklyn sometimes felt like "what's the point!" As opposed to now, where it's very much the point! It's hard to believe but back then Park Slope had some grit to it. Not like now, where it's all doggies and little kids. Years later I had a music studio in Park Slope, lived there in and around the 'hood, have had tons of friends live there....and not once have I reconciled the neighborhood with the one I knew back then! Until I looked at these flyers, I couldn't even tell you where Lauterbach's had been!
We had first played the club back in 1990. It had been our second show with Frank, a couple of months after the Southampton College gig. The club was either run or owned by the guitar player from The Shirts. I remember seeing The Shirts on Rockworld (pre-MTV video show that was on at, like, 3 in the morning), so I was impressed, I'd always corner him and pump him for Shirts trivia!
Anyways, we would play Lauterbachs every once in a while and I wouldn't be surprised if Frank just said, "Hey, I'll take a ride with you guys!".
We soundcheck with the earliest public performance of "Someone's In My Head", it was still in the arranging stages. Every other song is perfect. Because of onstage sound issues and equipment problems, we play two short sets (the front of house sounds great). Hearing Frank, Lawrence and Steve in the mix - everyone laying back a bit, giving room for everyone else - is delicious. It's the best of both eras. I'm really happy to have found this tape. And trust me, you will be too.
At the time, however, I'm not sure we felt that this was a good gig...or even a good thing! Judging from my notes, it looks like there was some ambivalence regarding Frank coming back! (see below) It had thrown us for a loop when he dropped out and we were still getting our sea legs with Lawrence and Steve, who knows what the problem was, but reading these old index cards, I wasn't sure I was even listening to the same show!
Pfft, Mike and his little opinions! The 2015 verdict is that this is a very well-played, non-showboaty couple of sets! Nary a misstep! I've now listened to it twice! Every member plays with impeccable taste throughout! And let's face it....you're just not going to find that many tapes with Frank, Lawrence AND Steve performing together! This may be the only one! So dig it! Brooklyn '92! I can see that dark, back room now, can't you? I can almost smell it. It's the smell of.......gig.

Heavens to Betsy, it's virtually a play-by-play of the show! Doesn't this guy ever get writer's cramp? |

Hubert Poole - guitar, vocal, percussion
Frank Russell - lead guitar
Lawrence Krauser - electric piano, synth, trumpet
Ted Schreiber - bass, vocal, percussion
Michael Goodman - drums, vocal
Steven Goodman - percussion, accordion
Recorded by Chris Ivers, one of the earliest tapes he made of LOOB. You can hear Lisa & Ward chatting in the background. You can also hear Dave Engelhardt egging on the band; he probably had driven a great distance to be there. There exists a DAT of this show as well.
