Nightingale Bar, May 5, 1992

I was anxious to digitize this one is because I saw it had "Gone Strong" on it! And in our last post, there was a mere 30 seconds of this elusive tune!  It's probably the first time we played it live, though it was a song that was started with Frank.  It's a slightly weird show,  with "Some Other" seguewaying (almost accidentally!) into "Sailing"!  At Nightingales!  A weird place to get spacey, two songs in a row, I know!  But that's what we did!  And once we took that road, we gave it 100%, and I think we did a great job keeping the show together!  (I still haven't posted the classic versions of "Sailing" yet, a song we were very proud of, but one that was so delicate, we could only do it once in a while!) Anyways, this is an interesting "Sailing", and an interesting, entertaining gig!

The Nightingale Bar exterior, as I'll always remember it.  There is a great video of us and our whole crew - including Captain America, Billy Capozzi - hanging out on this very street corner which, at that time, was pretty seedy.
It was our second show at this gloriously divey East Village venue.  At the time Blues Traveler and the Spin Doctors had just been signed out of the bar, so it had a bit of a buzz around it.  As I will say many times: back then, there were NO places to play, not many good ones.  And Nightingales was one of the best places to play at that time!  For one, it was completely unpretentious, it was just one divey room, with barely a stage, more of a carpeted platform directly opposite the bar. It had a mouth-watering jukebox of amazing 45s.  I remember Captain Beefheart's "Abba Zabba" being on there!  The 45!!!

You just don't find this every day in jukeboxes.  Or anywhere else!!!!
We had some great shows and times at the Nightingale Bar, no doubt.  There's at least two videos of us performing there, including the legendary Ted's birthday show.  Perhaps this is not one of the Hall of Fame gigs, but it's certainly a very good one! I listened (and enjoyed) the entire show - and I cannot say that about all of the 1992 shows!  Maybe it's just the venue.  Simply put: I always loved playing this room.

Unfortunately, it went through a major renovation a few years ago.

Ew!
Double ew! The remodeled interior.  It's since closed.

I think Ward made this flyer! The Lauterbach's show on the 16th  was acoustic, and will be posted sometime in the near future.
